2019. gada sākumā Latvijas Jūras administrācijas Jūrnieku reģistrā (JA JR) reģistrēti 12 444 jūrnieki, kas ir 0,6% no Latvijas iedzīvotāju skaita (aptuveni 1 935 000). Tomēr, lai salīdzinājums būtu korekts, vērā jāņem tikai iedzīvotāji, kuri sasnieguši 20 gadu vecumu, jo tikai apmēram šādā vecumā cilvēki sāk strādāt jūrā. Vecumā virs 20 gadiem ir aptuveni 1 542 000 Latvijas iedzīvotāju.
Lielākā daļa reģistrēto jūrnieku, protams, ir vīrieši – aptuveni 12 000 vai 96%, un tikai aptuveni 500 vai 4% sieviešu. Savukārt no iedzīvotājiem, kuri vecāki par 20 gadiem, vīrieši ir aptuveni 687 900, bet sievietes ir aptuveni 854 300. Salīdzinot vīriešu jūrnieku skaitu un par 20 gadiem vecāku vīriešu Latvijas iedzīvotāju skaitu, var secināt, ka aptuveni 1,8% no Latvijas iedzīvotājiem vīriešiem ir jūrnieki. Šādus aprēķinus veicis JA JR Konvencionālās uzraudzības daļas vadītājs Roberts Gailītis.
92% jeb aptuveni 11 500 Latvijas jūrnieku strādā tirdzniecības flotē, bet 8% jeb aptuveni 1000 jūrnieku – zvejas un iekšējo ūdeņu flotē. No tirdzniecības flotē strādājošiem 51% ir jūras virsnieki – kapteiņi, stūrmaņi, mehāniķi, elektromehāniķi, bet 49% ir ierindas jūrnieki, kuri veido klāja komandu, mašīntelpas komandu un apkalpojošo personālu.
Tikai 4% Latvijas jūrnieku strādā uz Latvijas karoga kuģiem, 44% uz Eiropas valstu kuģiem un 52% uz citu valstu kuģiem. 17% Latvijas jūrnieku strādā uz Maršalu salās reģistrētiem kuģiem, 11% uz Maltas kuģiem, 8% uz Apvienotās Karalistes kuģiem, tikpat uz Libērijas kuģiem. Vēl pa 5% strādā uz kuģiem, kas reģistrēti zem Norvēģijas karoga, Kipras karoga un Bahamas karoga.
